Improving Community Safety in London

Safer London - ALCOHOL HARM REDUCTION

Trading Standards Services in London reduce public disorder and protect the health of young Londoners by:

  • advising traders of the law relating to selling alcohol to young people
  • carrying out test purchases (using young volunteers in strictly controlled conditions)
  • participating in licensing reviews
  • prosecuting where appropriate

How does LoTSA help?

Through its Benchmarking and Service Development Group, LoTSA members can compare results and methods and explore new initiativesto use in their local area.

LoTSA has brought additional funding from central government to its members through regional participation in a series of Alcohol Misuse Enforcement Campaigns throughout 2006-7 and continues to campaign for more resources for this work

LoTSA is an active member of the London Anti-Social Behaviour Joint Action Group which is developinga"Safe - Sensible - Social" alcohol strategy for London

 

Safer London - KNIFE CRIME - REDUCING AVAILABILITY

Trading Standards Services in London protect young people by work such as:

  • advising traders of the law relating to the sale of blades to young people
  • carrying out test purchases (using young volunteers in strictly controlled conditions)
  • prosecuting where appropriate

How does LoTSA help?

Through its Benchmarking and Service Development Group, LoTSA members can compare results and methods and explore new initiativesto use in their local area

LoTSA is currently seeking funding for work across the region to combat knife crime

 

Safer London - DOORSTEP CRIME AND EXPLOITATION

Trading Standards Services in London employ a range of enforcement methods to protect residents from crime and exploitation related to Home Repairs, Improvements and Maintenance work offered by bogus or "rogue" traders, including:

  • controlled "cold-calling" zones
  • rapid reaction teams
  • public education campaigns

How does LoTSA help?

LoTSA assists through its Regional Intelligence capability to collect and analyse information from all London Local Authorities about rogue traders so as to create an early coordinated response to organised gangs of bogus tradesmen moving through the region.

LoTSA has further contributed to the campaign to reduce Doorstep Crime and deal with Rogue Traders through its work in setting up a Scambusters enforcement team funded by the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

"Scambusters Eetsa LoTSA TSSE"works jointly with surrounding regional Trading Standards groups to cover the whole of the South East of England.
